Week 5 Reflection

This week we discussed the importance of objectives and how to incorporate the ABCD formula. Objectives are needed because they describe what a child should be able to do or know in a given amount of time as a result of classroom instruction. Objectives should be student-centered, actionable, and measurable. Assessments help demonstrate if students have accurately measured the learning objectives, and if they do not coincide with each other, adjustments should be made. The ABCD formula is a guideline teachers should follow to ensure they create proper objectives. Objectives should contain all the ABCD formula elements, including Audience, Behavior, Conditions, and Degree. A clear, effective objective should state who is being addressed, what students need to do, the circumstances they need to follow, and how teachers will check to see if students understand the content. An example of an objective that follows the ABCD formula would be having students fill in the names of at least 25 states, in 5 minutes or less, with 100% accuracy.

I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot from Ms. Lauren's presentation! I feel like she helped me feel more confident in how to grade students in the future and helped me feel less nervous. She explained the standards-based grading scale, which I had never seen before. I liked this because it benefits teachers, students, and parents more. It helps everyone understand how well a student has mastered each standard. This way, there is more evidence of learning than just an overall letter grade. I also liked that she showed her worksheets that included the objectives she had already discussed with her students. I want to do this in the future because it will be an excellent way to see if I addressed all the important topics I needed to that year.

  2. Hi Morgan! Ms. Lauren also made me feel less nervous to become a teacher. I feel learning a bunch of content can be scary to us because we do not know what to do with it, but by her showing us some of her worksheets and the way she grades helped me a lot!

  3. I love how you did the colorful ABCD in your reflection to add the extra attention to it as well as making the blog look nice. All the points you had about the method too are really good and make it an effective strategy to use.
