Week 7 & 8 Reflection
In the last two weeks, we discussed quantitative data and how to create/alter instruction with it. In week 7, we discussed the foundational concepts associated with understanding data. Population is the entire group you want to draw conclusions about, for example, all 7-year-olds. The population is then used to draw samples. A sample is a specific group used to collect data from, for example, one classroom containing 7-year-olds. We also discussed the importance of validity and reliability in testing. Validity is about determining if a given assessment measures what it is supposed to measure. Reliability refers to whether the assessment results consistently and accurately measure that learning. Both of these concepts are needed for teachers to understand if their assessments and instruct
ion are beneficial for students. Lastly, we reviewed mean, median, mode, and range to know how to interpret different areas of a graph.
In week 8, we took what we learned and practiced using excel. We were given a sample of data to learn how to create charts and graphs. I was already familiar with excel, so this was a review for me. I was able to reflect on this assignment because it taught me how I should continue with instruction if these were real scenarios. It was beneficial to have graphs broken down by topic with scores for each child. I could observe if lessons should be retaught entirely to the class, if I should pull aside small groups for better instruction, or if I should move on because the students understand. Quantitative data can be useful for visually seeing areas where children are struggling; however, there may also be other factors that are affecting this data. We must consider the individual child and assess other reasons they might be struggling, especially if it is a reoccurring theme.
I love how you organized the information to be sweet and to the point. I also like how we broke it down as well because like you said it was easier to see what needed to be re-taught and how. I enjoyed reading your post. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteI liked how you talked about data being an easy way to determine what needs to be re-taught and how that can be accomplished/how it looks. I think that the video you included was very helpful and provided additional information about how data collections can help teachers in their classroom and in instruction.
