Week 1 Reflection

In last week's lectures, we learned about assessments and their importance within the classroom. Assessments are the process of observing and recording children's work. The information from assessments should be gathered in several different ways before being interpreted. Assessment is necessary in the classroom for many reasons. They ensure students understand current material based on their grade level, aid teachers in planning instruction on subjects/areas that may need more or less demonstration for students, and communicate to families on students' progression. I also learned that all assessments are either formal or informal. Formal assessments are statistics-based data that is used to compare the performance of students and evaluate the effectiveness of a school's education. Some examples include tests and quizzes. Informal assessments are focused more on students' own performance and are useful for teacher planning when looking for students' strengths and weaknesses. Portfolios and rating scales are examples of informal assessments.
There are many different types of assessments, and teachers should use a combination of them to accurately assess students' knowledge. Formative assessments give insight into how well students understand concepts while they are being taught. They are a way for teachers, students, and families to receive feedback "in the moment." Parent-teacher conferences and exit tickets are examples of formative assessments. Summative assessments provide evidence on whether students have learned specific concepts after closing out a unit or term. Summative assessments are always graded, cover a wide array of information, and assess the effectiveness of teaching. Chapter tests and state exams are examples of summative assessments.
I would want to ensure that I use all types of assessments in my future classroom because some students may excel better on certain ones. I also want to include parents in the assessment process because parents might see students learning differently at home.

Comments

  1. I like the fact that you said you want to provide many different types because some students may not respond well to just one type. This is so important to remember as a future teacher. I really liked how you also broke this down.

  2. I like the diagrams that you used to show in a different way then just words for what assessment is. I also plan on using all different kinds of assessments in my future classroom.
